First day of school

Date: 1/10/22
Training Day: 36
Activity: Yoga (hamstrings)

How It Felt: It has been soooo long since I’ve gotten up early and practiced yoga before work. It felt wonderful and is such a great way to start the day. My hamstrings are grateful as well!

Commentary: As far as this week goes, all I could think about was my first week of training and shiftwork. And having to get all my shit together for my Utah vacation next week. This morning I suddenly realized that classes for the spring semester start today. Could this week get any more awesome?

I am a lifelong learner. If I could go to school for the rest of my life I would. Unfortunately, that requires a lot of money. Lucky for me, my company pays for continuing education and degrees and whatnot.

My fellowship was rough. I spent a summer flying drones off the coast of Napatree Point.

When I was going to URI I did a fellowship involving unmanned aerial systems (UAS), photogrammetry, and geographic information systems (GIS). No, it didn’t have anything to do with my environmental and natural resource economics degree, but I really enjoyed it. I’ve always wanted to get a GIS graduate certificate, but I don’t have the right professional background or college courses to get into such a program.

To set myself up for potentially getting this certificate, I enrolled at Idaho State University for an AAS in Civil Engineering Technology, which can be completed fully online. It covers surveying, drafting, GIS, UAS and a whole bunch of other stuff. I only need to take three classes a semester for the spring and fall semester for the next three and a half years. No big deal.

Looooong story short, this is my first day back to school! I was under the impression all the classes were asynchronous, meaning I could do the work whenever as long as it got done by the due date. Tis not the case. The UAS class is synchronous, and we meet every Thursday and Saturday 6-7:30pm.

I am not thrilled about this. But it is what it is. I’m still excited about starting classes. Hopefully I’m not overloading myself. Between training, school and self care, it would be nice to have some time to spend with my husband as well.
