Grad school, eek!
Training Day: 75
Miles: 2.4 (treadmill)
Time: 36 min
Shoes: Xero HFS
How It Felt: The run felt okay. I don’t know if my legs and ankles were tight, or if the stupid slow pace made them feel tight. I kept my heart rate at or below 140 bpm almost the entire time, even though it forced me to walk to get it under 140. I’m not entirely convinced I want to keep up this super easy running…
Commentary: After my run I got ready to go to work. On a Friday? Allow me to explain. I found out a drone flight was occurring right next to where I work, and I asked if I could come watch since I’m taking a drone imagery analysis class. During my 45-minute drive out to the site I wondered if it was worth watching a simple drone flight over a building.
A professor from Idaho State was the pilot and owner of the drone being used for the flight. I chatted with her for a bit, told her about the research I did at the University of Rhode Island using drones for natural resources mapping. I also told her about my interest in geographic information systems and how I hoped to get into that someday.
She asked me if I had a degree. I told her it was in environmental economics, and that I didn’t think it would help me get into grad school for GIS. She told me her department has been doing more working involving natural resource economics, but none of their grad students understand or know how to do the economics side of it. Then she told me I should apply because I would be valuable to their program!
My drive out there was not waste! I had no idea that I might be able to get into grad school for GIS with economics background, and now it makes me desirable! I have been beaming every since.
This is quite fortuitous if you ask me. I haven’t been the happiest at work, and the associate’s I’m working on isn’t what I really want to be studying. I’ve been dying to figure out how to utilize GIS for environmental and natural resource economics since I have a strong interest in both, and now it’s going to happen.
